Speaking Skill Practice Lesson Plan (SSPL)

Duration:            45 Mins
Aim:                    To teach and practice speaking skills.
Objective:           By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
-          describe a person’s job.
-          speak accurately and fluently.
-          write a text about someone’s job using Present Simple.
Skill focused:     Writing
Material:             New Interchange 1, Third Edition, Unit 2, page 9

Lesson Opener: (3 Mins)
·      Greeting: The teacher says, “Good evening, everyone”
·      Warmer:  The teacher asks some students about their family members’ jobs.
·      Title of the lesson:  Today we’re going to study “Unit 2: How do you spend your day?”

I.     PRE-SPEAKING (15 Mins)
1.    Revising and Pre-teaching Vocabulary:
A.    Revision
-     a fisherman  
-     a construction worker 
-     a lumberjack 
B.     Pre-teach
-     a salesperson  (explanation)      
-     a flight attendant  (picture) 
-     a carpenter (picture)
-     a receptionist (picture)
-        The teacher gets the students to match the words or phrases in column A, B and C on page 9.
-        The teacher goes around and provides help to the students as needed.
-        The teacher checks the answers and writes them on the board.
                                        
2.    Revising a structure of Simple present Wh-Questions and statements
-        The teacher writes some statements (answers) on the board and gets the students to make the questions for the answers.
                                                                                                       Possible Answers
-     I’m a student.                                                    What do you do? /What’s your job?
-     I work in ABC Restaurant.                                Where do you work?
-     I go to the University of Texas.                         Where do you go to school?
-     David works at Thomas Cook Travel.               Where does David work?
-     He loves it.                                                         How does he like it?
-        The teacher writes the answers on the board for the students and gets them to copy into their notebooks.
3.    Controlled Practice
-        The teacher divides the class into two blocks. Block A asks the questions on the board and Block B answers the questions on the board.
-        The teacher gets the students to swap the roles and continue doing drill.
-        The teacher gets two students to be a model practicing the drill in front of the class.
-        The teacher gets all the students to work in pairs.
-        The teacher monitors and notes mistakes made by the students during their practice.
-        The teacher corrects the mistakes after the practice if found during monitoring.

II.  MAIN SPEAKING (15 Mins)
1.    Less-controlled Practice:
(Answer the Questions)
-     The teacher gets the students to look at the questions on the board.
-     The teacher gets them to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions about themselves.
-     The teacher monitors and notes down the students’ mistakes.
-     The teacher corrects any mistake found at the end of the activity.

2.    Production/ Free Practice (Speaking)
   (Describing a Person/Place/Picture)
-     The teacher gets the students to work in a group of 5.
-     The teacher asks the students to take turn to describe about someone they know well to the group.
e.g.  Please describe someone you know well using name, job, what they do, where they work…….
-     The teacher monitors the pair work and gives some help as needed.
-     The teacher corrects some mistakes if necessary.

III.   POST SPEAKING (Writing) (10 Mins)
Topic: Write a short story about a relative’s job in your families using Present Simple.
-     The teacher gets the students to write short story of their relatives’ jobs.
-     The teacher monitors the class and helps them.
-     The teacher asks the students to compare their stories with their partners.
-     The teacher asks a few students to read out their partner’s stories aloud.

LESSON CLOSURE: (2 Mins)
·      The teacher says, “Thank you for working hard today”
·      The teacher summaries what the students have learnt.
·      The teacher gives feedback of the lesson to the students.
·      The teacher says, “Goodbye”.
